Almost raw food diet, day two.

DAY 2...

spent most of the day lazing on my sun lounger fantasising about being at Glastonbury, no music though, just the usual sound of a distant grass strimmer. Was rather annoyed with the lounger as I've only had it for a day and a stray ember from the barbecue landed and burnt a small hole in the cheap fabric!! I was toying with the idea of sticking the instructions over the hole with sellotape, wrapping it up and taking it back to the supermarket, but was too lazy to delve into the bin juice in the trash and find the receipt, so glued a fabric daisy over the hole instead!

I was going to excitedly tell of the new spicy dressing I made for a new batch of the slaw, which I carefully mashed up by christening my pestle and mortar, (Le Creuset, a Christmas gift!) , with the inclusion of even more mustard, to give it body, a clove of garlic and crushed chili with cumin seeds. It was delicious for breakfast with a hard boiled egg, but would benefit from a grated apple or other fruit. I will not recommend it for an evening meal after too much sun and wine, as my body rejected it and it is now somewhere in the garden, just hope no-one saw the projectile nature of it!

I have seriously underestimated the amount of fruit needed for a raw diet and ran ran out early in the morning, so will have to replenish stocks again tomorrow. The celery and hummus is a disaster too, as the celery is too bitter and green, with the hummus being too calorie rich. The best thing today was the barbecue, I only ate a couple of lamb koftas, at 75 calories each! Great with a yogurt and mint dressing!

It's hard to say how many calories I consumed, so I'm saying nothing, but I did take a photo of my belly to compare with when I have had enough of trying to loose weight!

All in all a fairly successful day then, but what the hell am I going to eat tomorrow?

 
The evil dressing recipe! Olive oil. white balsamic vinegar, mustard, lemon juice, garlic, cumin seeds, chili.
 
Definitely do NOT put garlic, chili or spices in the dressing, keep it simple!

Grapefruit, strawberries, dried fruit and nuts, perfect!! 30g of the fruit and nut mix comes in at 130 calories, so go easy tiger!

Almost raw food diet day one.

DAY 1...

So I made  it through the 1st day of the "Almost raw food diet". I'm sure all the experts out there on raw food diets would not expect one to just hop from a "normal" slobs diet straight into a super healthy raw diet.

I managed to get through day 1 with a bowl of the slaw, see yesterday's recipe, which I supplemented with an omelette made by grilling mushrooms and cherry tomatoes, added to a dry pan with herbs and one beaten egg. The omelette looked a bit of a mess, but tasted great. I added a small squirt of salad cream (slap wrists!!"). Later I ate a little hummus with celery, strawberries and a few nuts and seeds. In the evening I ate a small amount of cooked ham with a bunch of salad rocket. I had a couple of glasses of red wine, as I am after all a grown up!

I know cheese will be my downfall if anything is, so I am allowing one cheese slice per day, the horrible sort which you put on burgers. Only to be allowed when I am absolutely desperate and starving!
It only has 50 calories per slice and added to a Ryvita crisp bread, comes in at only about 85 calories...remember, I am trying to loose a few pounds, this is a weight loss diet!

I recon I consumed around 1300 calories plus the wine, let's see what happens tomorrow!
This morning I lay in the bath and I'm sure my belly felt a bit flatter, that spurred me onward. Have to admit to being a bit worried about Mr. T wanting another barbecue today as the weather looks hopeful! Maybe I can make veg kebabs, good idea!

TIP...

If you are trying to loose weight, always cook with a high quality non stick pan, it needs to be good as new with no scratches, this way you will need very little or no oil. Grill soft vegetables, No oil added, such as mushrooms, they will look a bit wrinkly, but taste fine. Add chilli, herbs and other non fat flavourings.

Grow your own herbs if possible, it's fun and cheaper than buying them from the supermarket. I grow mine in a bath tub by kitchen door for easy access to a big bunch of parsley, mint, rosemary, chives and thyme!

Summer raw food slaw.

Lately I've taken an interest in raw food diets, where individuals survive on smoothies, various other fruit dishes and vegetable recipes. You can snack on nuts, seeds and some animal products if you wish, so long as they are not cooked or processed. I'm not keen on raw meat, raw eggs or fish, so I'll give that option a miss!

There are many folk on You tube explaining the virtues of a raw food diet, but I don't seem to have very much in common with most of them as they all seem to live in places like California, where it is hot and sunny, rather than blighty where it's usually too cold for me, even in summer. At least it has stopped raining and is brightening up this afternoon, (Well it is Glastonbury and Wimbledon week, so what do you expect!!).

Back to the raw food diet! I've been feeling a bit podgy lately, especially as I keep looking at very skinny celebrities on the Daily Mail Online!
I've decided to incorporate more raw food into my "eating plan" and cut out bread, pasta and any other stodgy carb and fat ridden forbidden foods (except wine, Oh and cheese will be really tough!)

I made this healthy summer slaw which is a really nice base for a salad. You pile the slaw on your plate and add "good" foods, such as avocado, grilled vegetables, a one egg omelette, made with no oil or butter. It makes a satisfying dish which will keep me full for many hours. I will allow myself a little cooked chicken and fish on some days, if we're having a barbecue, as we have already had three barbecue's this week due to Mr. T being obsessed with this style of cooking! He can have burgers, but it's just a fillet of trout for moi!

I will probably have two of these mostly raw meals per day and a few snacks of nuts, fruit, dried fruit and radishes. Let's see if I can try to shift a few pounds, Ill let you know how I get on!

Summer slaw recipe. Enough for two servings.

Approximately 1/4 of a whole white cabbage, finely shredded.
1 whole grated carrot.
Fresh garden herbs, parsley and chives.


Dressing.

Dessert spoon olive oil.
white balsamic vinegar.
Large dollop of mustard.
Lemon juice.
A grind of black pepper.
Pinch of salt, optional.

Mix all together to taste!
Keep refrigerated for up to two days, after then it may go watery, so make a fresh batch.
Add any other raw vegetables you fancy, at the time of serving, such as water cress, peppers, cucumber, radishes.

Flower Festival crowns.

We have passed the summer solstice and are deep into the festival season, with Glastonbury about to kick off this weekend, oh is that a few drops of rain I see through the window?
I have for some reason only just realised that I am making a very late start in the production of suitable flowery summer headbands which can  double up as great festival headwear or add the finishing touch to a demure wedding outfit! So, full steam ahead today and tomorrow, as I've been busy twisting twine for lovely informal natural crown shapes and adding millinery flowers.
The headbands are very comfortable to wear and adjustable with ribbon ties. Here's a couple to be going on with, let's see what else I can come up with. These are ready to pop in the post from my Folksy shop.
If you are braving "Glasto" or any other UK festivals, don't  forget to pack the wellies!!
